๐Week 10.5 in Unemployment Land. Let's talk about Misogynoir.
๐ฉ๐ฟโ๐ซ Our friends at Merriam-Webster Inc. define misogynoir as hatred of, aversion to, or prejudice against Black women. The word has a long history but didn't enter the public zeitgeist until 2010. Misogynoir is a special flavor of racism that loves to mix with racism in insidious ways.
๐๏ธโ๐จ๏ธ What misogynoir looks like in the workplace is entirely situational. It may look like your spectacular colleague is denied promotions compared to mediocre, but more palpable white woman. It may look like a college-educated black woman who has been stuck in underpaying roles for years in an industry she didn't study in. Or it may look like a black woman being excluded from social events that are critical for networking because she may be uncomfortable.
๐ I could write an entire essay about how misogynoir has affected my career. For now, I will offer you a list.
๐ซ Being told I ask too many questions and should focus on my work.
๐ซ Having managers go behind my back to collect negative feedback about my work which resulted in a let's help her campaign. The negative feedback came from folks who rarely reviewed my work.
๐ซ Male colleagues taking me under their wing and then being angry when I successfully made sales goals or surpassed their goals.
๐ซ Upper management described me as passionate when championing social causes at work.
๐ซ Colleagues shoving work onto my plate and then taking the credit for it.
๐ซ Whispering about me to other colleagues which may (or may not) have tarnished my reputation.
โฐ Most recently, I noticed folks documenting their journey after being laid off. I find the posts both consequential and tasteless. The format of some of these posts is a bit too similar to mine and they lack an authentic voice.
I've had my work copied before. I usually say nothing. However, I think this is a great opportunity to discuss the iniquity that plagues black women professionals like me.
It's so easy to tag each other and lift each other up. Let's cut it out. We all lost our jobs. Don't take this away from me too.
